The Ocean Cleanup, a pioneering organization tackling plastic pollution, has taken an extraordinary step towards sustainability by transforming river plastic waste into a unique musical masterpiece. In collaboration with the iconic band Coldplay, they have created an eco-friendly vinyl record, showcasing innovation and environmental stewardship.

The journey began with the collection of plastic waste from Guatemala’s heavily polluted rivers. Using advanced interceptors, The Ocean Cleanup extracted high-quality PET plastic from the debris. This material underwent meticulous processing, including sorting, hot washing, and transportation to Europe for further refinement. The result? A sustainable, high-grade PET suitable for vinyl record production.

Coldplay’s new album, Moon Music, features a special edition eco-record made from this reclaimed plastic. The process was not without challenges—ensuring the plastic’s purity and sound quality was paramount. Contaminants in the material posed risks to sound fidelity, but the team achieved a breakthrough through innovative techniques and partnerships.

This collaboration symbolises the shift towards a circular economy, turning waste into valuable resources. It also highlights the potential of upcycling to inspire global change. Esther F. Loone, Riverways Valorisation Manager at The Ocean Cleanup, expressed her excitement: “Seeing waste transformed into something as beautiful as music is truly inspiring.”

Coldplay, long-time supporters of The Ocean Cleanup, have been instrumental in this initiative. Frontman Chris Martin emphasised the importance of such partnerships in fostering creativity and sustainability.

This project goes beyond music—it’s a call to action. By demonstrating the potential of upcycled materials, The Ocean Cleanup and Coldplay are proving that environmental solutions can be innovative, impactful, and even artistic. Together, they’re setting a powerful example of how we can combat pollution and create a more sustainable future.
